Why I Learned the Hard Way that DJI NEO and Strong Cider Don't Mix: My Personal Drone Disaster

Ah, the thrill of flying drones! Few activities can compare to the excitement of commanding a device that captures stunning views from the sky. Recently, I attempted to blend my love for drone flying with another passion: strong cider. This combination led to what I now call my personal drone disaster.

In this post, I’ll share how a sunny afternoon, a few pints of strong cider, and my trusty DJI NEO drone turned into a chaotic experience. It’s a lesson learned the hard way, and hopefully, my story will help others avoid making the same mistake.

The Beginning: A Perfect Day for Flying

Milford, Stafford

It was a nearly perfect weekend. The sun was shining brightly, the wind was calm, and my DJI NEO was fully charged and ready to go. I settled in my backyard, surrounded by lush greenery, with a cider in hand. The refreshing taste was delightful under the warm sun. I thought, "Why not take my drone for a spin?"

Just a few weeks earlier, I had read numerous articles praising the DJI NEO's performance and ease of use. With increasing confidence, I felt today was the day to show off my flying skills.

The Decision: Cider and Drones Don’t Mix

I can't remember the exact moment I decided to have "just one more" cider before launching my drone. Perhaps it was the delicious taste or the enjoyable atmosphere that made me ignore my better judgment. The more I sipped, the more excited I became about capturing stunning aerial shots of my garden. With one last drink down, I confidently grabbed my DJI NEO, feeling invincible.

The Launch: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

With my drone prepared and confidence soaring high, I found the perfect open space in my yard. I set everything up and got ready for takeoff. Unbeknownst to me, my impaired judgment was about to steal the show.

After a few attempts to connect the controller, I took a deep breath and pressed the launch button. The propellers whirred, and the DJI NEO ascended smoothly into the sky. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched it capture the stunning views below.

The Flight: Chasing the High

The maneuvers felt incredible, and I reveled in the freedom of piloting my drone. The crisp images of my surroundings were breathtaking. However, as the seconds turned into minutes, I found myself distracted by the strong cider. Instead of concentrating entirely on my flight, I took sips from my glass while trying to navigate the drone. In hindsight, that was my first significant mistake—a mistake I didn't recognize until it was too late.

The Disaster: When It All Went Wrong

Everything seemed to be going smoothly until I decided to channel my inner daredevil. I pointed the drone towards the tall trees at the back of my yard, hoping to capture a breathtaking view of the branches doing their best impersonation of a wind-blown dance party. But just as I got close, I lost sight of the drone for a split second and went into full-on panic mode, convinced I had just sent my high-tech toy on a one-way trip to the great beyond. I could almost hear the trees snickering, "Nice try, buddy! You thought you could take us on a joyride?"

Instead of calming down and regaining my focus, I began to jerk the joystick left and right while frantically sipping my cider. That’s when disaster struck. I heard the sound of snapping branches as my DJI NEO collided with the very trees I had aimed to film. One moment of distraction was all it took.

The Aftermath: Reality Hits

When I rushed to the crash site, disbelief washed over me. The drone lay tangled in branches, and my heart sank. All those hours spent mastering my DJI NEO lost in an instant.

Once I retrieved the drone, I quickly assessed the damage. The propellers were bent, and the body was scratched. My initial excitement turned into deep regret.

Lessons Learned: What I Took Away From This Experience

Reflecting on that day, I learned several important lessons to share with others.

Alcohol and Machinery Don’t Mix

This truth can’t be overstated. Just like you wouldn’t drink and drive, the same goes for flying drones. Operating any machinery demands focus and concentration, both of which alcohol severely impairs. In fact, studies have shown that the likelihood of accidents increases significantly with even small amounts of alcohol.

Respect Your Equipment

Drones, especially advanced models like the DJI NEO, are sophisticated pieces of technology. Properly maintaining and respecting such equipment is crucial for its performance and longevity. Unfortunately, I had treated my drone more like a toy than a valuable tool.

Know Your Limits

Recognizing your limits is vital in any activity. I should have understood that too much cider impacted my ability to fly safely. Developing the skill to listen to your body takes time, but it’s well worth it.

Enjoy Responsibly

Cider and sunshine can pair beautifully—but responsibility is key. Instead of combining my two favorites, I could have scheduled my drone flying for earlier in the day and saved the cider for later.

A Key Takeaway: Responsible Enjoyment

Reflecting on that day, I chuckle at how quickly things escalated. What began as a delightful afternoon turned into a cautionary tale. Since that incident, I’ve reevaluated my drone flying habits and committed to flying sober. While I still enjoy a cider now and then, I keep it well away from my flying sessions.

So, for fellow drone enthusiasts, let my story serve as a humble reminder: drones and strong cider simply don’t mix. To capture those stunning aerial views, prioritize safety, stay sober, and enjoy each moment with your trusty DJI NEO.

Thanks for reading! I hope this post encourages others to practice safe flying and avoid their own drone disasters. Cheers to more safe and responsible flying in the future!
